TRYOUT PROCEDURES 2010-2011
by Gary Powers posted 03/05/2010

 2010-2011
Level 1 & 2 Travel Team Tryout Procedure
(Previously noted as A & B)

Objective

It is the objective of Cape Cod Canal Youth Hockey (CCCYH) to conduct an annual placement tryout during the Spring. The purpose of this tryout is to place players on teams of compatible skill and ability level. Once completed, the number of teams representing CCCYH the following season in the Yankee and South Shore Conferences will be determined. There will be no pull ups or other chances to tryout for CCCYH in the Fall.

Player Options and Responsibilities
Players / Parent  Responsibilities:
1. Satisfying all unpaid balances due to Cape Cod Canal Youth Hockey from the previous seasons.
2. Registering on line and making your first payment with CCCYH in advance of the tryout dates for the 2010-2011 season.
3. Arriving at least 30 minutes prior to the time of tryouts in order to register and receive his/her number.
4. Being prepared to give it his/her all during the tryouts.
5. Making sure that vest numbers are visible during the tryout session (no tying or scrunching). If vests do not fit return it to the registrar’s table for a more appropriate size.
6. Skaters will not be allowed to wear jerseys with their names on the back.

Level (3)  Teams: Players wishing to play at level 3 teams do not need to attend tryouts, but do need to register and pay the non refundable registration fee prior to tryouts to secure their spot on a team.

Goaltenders
Any player who intends to play goaltender must attend a separate goalie tryout session as well as full team tryouts.

Tryout Absences
If a player is unable to attend his/her scheduled tryout session; it is the responsibility of the parents to contact the coaching director before the tryout dates. Parents must contact Rich Lennox  BEFORE the first day of tryouts. If a player fails to tryout they will be placed on a level 2 or 3 team.

Items considered for placing a player not able to attend tryouts are as follows:
1. The immediate past season coach’s evaluation.
2. The past history of the particular player’s team level placement.
A decision will be reached using the above information by the coaching directors committee.

CCCYH Policies and Procedures

    1. It is the goal of CCCYH to place 13 skaters plus 1 goaltender on each of the Level (1)  and Level (2) teams whenever possible. For Level (3) teams     the goal is to NOT to have rosters smaller than the Level (1) and (2) teams.

    2. Coaches MUST complete an evaluation form for each of their players and provide this information to the coaching director in a timely fashion. At     least three coaches (head coach and two assistant coaches) must agree on the depth chart placement.

3. Players who do not participate in the tryout process and who have not informed the coaching director in advance of their inability to try out will be placed at the lowest level within their age group.

4. New players to the program who miss tryouts will be treated the same as players who missed the tryouts and will start at the lowest level within their age group.

Tryout Format
The tryouts will be composed of two distinct segments WITHIN the same tryout session. The segments will be skills and scrimmage and will be conducted on the SAME night.

For Example: Skills will be held from 5:30pm-6:30 p.m. and scrimmage from 6:30pm-7:30 p.m.

Skills portion of the tryout

1. Evaluators will grade players on various skills using a 1-10 scale (whole numbers only with 1 being the most skilled and 10 being the least skilled).
2. The skills portion of the tryout will consist of 4 to 6 separate skill drills. Each evaluator will evaluate all stations.
3. The coaching director or a designee will select a person to run each skill station. The skill stations will demonstrate skating, passing, puck handling, and shooting.
4. The coaching directors will provide the drills to be performed at each station using a predetermined format for that level’s tryout.
5. The evaluators can speed up or slow down the drills if they feel it necessary.
6. An allowance of 1 hour is provided for the skills portion of the tryout. This allowance was made so that players could be spread out enough during the skills portion of the tryout to allow the evaluators ample time to see each player.

Scrimmage portion of the tryout
1. The scrimmage portion of the tryout will follow the skills portion of the tryout.

2.
The evaluators will grade players on their abilities in a game setting using the same 1-10 scale as previously mentioned.
 3. Scrimmages will be 4 on 4 with 60 second buzzer shifts.
 4. Checking will be included in the Bantam and Midget level scrimmages.
 5. There will be at least one coach stationed on each team bench during the scrimmage.
 Goalie Tryouts
 1.                  45 minutes will be allowed for goalie specific tryouts.
2.                  Additionally goalies are expected to try out with their appropriate level teams.
3.                  Goalies will be evaluated using the following drills:
a.       C Cuts
b.      Shuffles
c.       Butterfly Strides
d.      Box Drill
e.       Station Drill
4.                  Goalies will be evaluated by 4 to 6 evaluators.

Evaluation Method

For each level there will be an evaluation team as determined by the coaching directors. The evaluation team will be comprised of coaching directors, CCCYH board members, coaches and volunteers. Each evaluator will be posted at different areas in the arena. This will insure that all players will have an equal opportunity to be observed. If the CCCYH Board of Directors determines that there are a sufficient number of evaluators, it may choose to drop the highest and lowest score for each player when determining scores for each tryout session.
            Evaluators
1.      Must not congregate together during the tryouts.
2.      Must not discuss the grading of any players amongst other evaluators or with any parent.
3.      Must not evaluate their own child.
4.      Must use whole numbers on evaluation sheets.
5.      Must fill in a evaluation for each player (exempting their own child).
6.      Must not engage with parents at any time during the course of evaluations.

Following the scrimmage and skills session all evaluations will be given to the coaching director immediately. The forms will be entered into a spread sheet. Placements will be using the numerical evaluation method.

Team Selection
Evaluations submitted by the current year coach and each player’s scores from scrimmage and skills sessions will be combined based on the following weighting process:

Players
60 percent scrimmage
40 percent skills

Goalies
60 percent skills
40 percent scrimmage

The coaching directors will convene as a committee to evaluate the tryout results and weigh the previous years coaches’ evaluation form to confirm final placement on a team.

Second year players will be given priority over first year players in the event scores and evaluations are equal.

The CCCYH Coaching Directors Committee shall have sole responsibility for selecting each team.

The CCCYH Coaching Directors Committee may at its sole discretion select only 10 skaters at the (1) level tryouts and “pull up” the remaining 3 skaters from the level (2) tryouts if the Coaching Directors Committee deems it in the best interest of the team to do so.

Any disagreements regarding a player’s team assignment will be decided by the board of directors.

Notification

Team rosters shall be posted on the CCCYH website when the team selections are finalized (no later than the weekend after each levels tryout). This will be the official notification.

by posted 03/04/2010

Hello,

I am very proud to announce that CCCYH has been approved for $4500 for the 2010-2011 season.  I would like to recognize Pat Barrett for building and the program that was approved.  Again I want to thank Pat for his efforts in this area…great job.

They have invited pat and I to the April 1st Bruins game where the Bruins will present CCCYH with a check and photo opportunity with various folks in the Cheever’s org and the youth area of the Bruins.

Thanks,

Terry Layo
President
